Is it a fruit, a vegetable or something else?

I like to think of this as something else!

Ah yes, the lovely and amazing avocado! People often wonder if this little bundle of deliciousness is a fruit or a vegetable.

From a botanical perspective, it's considered a fruit.

From a nutritional perspective I consider it a healthy fat (primarily a monounsaturated fat like olives) and a great source of fiber (a medium avocado has about 10 grams). Both of which will keep you fuller for longer, won't spike your blood sugar and help keep you regular.

These are really good things. When paired with a protein you've hit the trifecta for a balanced meal: one that contains fat, fiber and protein.

My favorite ways to eat this wonder-food. Add it to your morning eggs and toast with some micro-greens… delish. Having salad for lunch… add ½ an avocado, pepitas and some protein and notice how much easier it is to get through the afternoon slump. At dinner, make some simple guacamole to go with your burger and suddenly that bun becomes way less important. It also makes a great snack with some malden salt, a squeeze of lemon or lime and a spoon!

If you're one who feels nauseas when eating higher fat foods like avocado that can indicate a need to support fat digestion. Other indications you may need support when it comes to fat digestion are if you get pain in your gallbladder (under the right side of your rib cage), your stools float in the bowl or your cholesterol numbers are high.

Now, if you're one who has a difficult time with the fiber component, this can indicate a need for digestive support. Or perhaps you have what is referred to as dysbiosis, which is a fancy name for an imbalance of the beneficial and opportunistic bacteria in your gut. This can cause uncomfortable and sometime embarrassing symptoms like gas and bloating.

If either of these happen on a regular basis, it's a good idea to get to the bottom of it because when left unchecked it can lead to nutrient deficiencies, metabolic and hormonal disturbances and eventually over time chronic disease.

If you or someone you know would like some help figuring this out, I'd love to help you. I have space to take on a couple of new clients this month. Click here to schedule a free discovery call and learn more about working together.
