Thinking About Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, or Another Weight-Loss Medication? Here's What I Want You to Know.
Whether you're thinking about Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, Mounjaro, or another GLP-1 medication for weight loss, here's where I stand.
When GLP-1 medications first hit the scene, I'll be honest...
I was concerned.
Maybe even a little judgy.
As someone who has spent years helping women improve their health through nutrition and lifestyle, I worried we were looking for another quick fix that would leave people high and dry in the long run.
But over the past couple of years, my perspective has changed.
Not because I think they're the answer for everyone.
And not because I think everyone struggling with weight should or needs to be taking one.
Part of what's changed is that these medications have become much more widely available.
And while I think that's helping many people access a tool that may improve their health, it also means many women are starting them with very little guidance on how to nourish their body while taking them or what happens if they eventually decide to stop.
To me, that's a missed opportunity.
My perspective has changed because I've been watching what happens in real life.
I've worked with women who have experienced great success on GLP-1 medications.
I've also worked with women who developed life-disrupting digestive side effects, hit frustrating plateaus, struggled to tolerate the medication, or found themselves wondering, "Now what?" after coming off because they were worried about gaining the weight back.
Here's how I'm thinking about GLP-1s today.
I think GLP-1 medications can be an incredible tool.
But they're just that a tool.
Much like hormone replacement therapy, they work best as part of a bigger plan (there's no free lunch here either!).
A plan that includes a nutrient-dense, protein and fiber-forward way of eating, proper hydration, strength training, movement, proper tracking to make sure muscle isn't being lost, attention to gut health, and the habits that support long-term metabolic health.
They're not the right choice for everyone.
Not everyone wants to take them.
Not everyone can afford to stay on them indefinitely.
And many people don't plan to.
Which is why I think "Should I take a GLP-1?" is only the beginning of the conversation.
The Questions I'd Ask Before Starting
How can I prepare my body before I start?
How can I support my body while I'm taking it?
What can I do if I hit a plateau?
How can I maintain my results if I decide to come off?
Because my goal isn't simply to help women lose weight.
It's to help them build health that lasts.
That's exactly the approach I take with my clients, whether they're preparing for a GLP-1, currently taking one, or looking for support after coming off.
Because while these medications can reduce appetite and quiet what many people describe as "food noise," they don't automatically preserve muscle, improve digestive health, ensure you're getting the nutrients your body needs, or build the habits that will still be there long after the medication is gone.
That's where nutrition and lifestyle become so important.
Whether someone decides to take a GLP-1 or not, my goal is still the same: to help them build a healthier, more resilient body.
Thinking About Your Next Step?
If you're considering a GLP-1 or you're already taking one, you don't have to figure it out on your own.
Whether it's preparing your body before you start, navigating digestive side effects, protecting muscle, or creating a plan for life after the medication, having the right support can make all the difference.
